FAQs
WHAT IS INSTANT COFFEE?
Instant coffee is brewed coffee concentrate that has either been freeze-dried or spray dried to create a soluble, long-lasting coffee. The process involves the coffee being roasted and then commercially brewed to create a concentrate. Once the coffee has a higher enough concentration or TDS (total dissolved solids) it is then either spray dried or freeze dried. Traditionally coffee was spray-dried (heat dried) to convert the brewed coffee into a soluble form, however recently freeze-drying the coffee has been the more popular choice as more volatiles (flavour/ aroma) can be maintained, thus creating a higher quality product. Once the coffee has been dried it is then ground up into small granules.
DO YOU USE ANY PRESERVATIVES OR ADDITIVES?
No preservatives or additives are used in any part of the process. Lay Day coffee is 100% arabica beans, nothing else.
IS IT VEGAN?
Yes all our coffees are vegan friendly
WHAT IS DIFFERENT ABOUT LAY DAY?
There are many key differences in LAY DAY coffees compared to large scale instant coffee products. Firstly, the coffee beans LAY DAY uses. We use 100% arabica beans (a superior coffee bean variety to its cousin the Robusta bean) that has been graded as speciality (above 80 pts on the grading system). This ensures we are using the best quality coffee to start with. Secondly is the brewing method. Large scale instant coffee companies brew each coffee to maximise yields and high concentrations. Whilst this reduces their costs it also reduces the flavour and quality of the coffee. At Lay Day we brew to much lower concentrations, therefore maintaining a greater quality and superior flavour. Finally we freeze-dry our coffee. This traps in more flavour than heat drying, therefore resulting in a superior final product.
WHAT BEANS DO YOU USE?
We use 100% single-origin arabica beans from Papua New Guinea. Located in a valley surrounded by renowned Mt Elimbari, Kongo coffee is an indigenously owned coffee supplier that provides many jobs and livelihoods to the local community. Unfortunately, like many other coffee producing countries, PNG’s coffee production has been in steady decline since the 1990’s. Climate change, inequitable paying conditions for farmers and a lack of funding is contributing to a rapid decline in PNG’s second largest agricultural commodity.

IS YOUR COFFEE FAIR TRADE?
At Lay Day, we pay at or above fair trade prices. Whilst not fair trade certified, the direct trade relationships with our coffee suppliers allow us to work closely with coffee farms to ensure that every farmer is paid fairly. Ultimately directly trading with coffee suppliers allows for a more transparent relationship.
Lay Day is absolutely committed to ensuring that all our coffee suppliers are remunerated fairly and that all farmers receive a fair share for their work.
Please email hello@laydaycoffee.com for any more questions you may have.
DO YOU HAVE COFFEE SACHETS?
We currently don’t produce any coffee sachets. Due to the negative impact of sachets on the environment, using them would severely contradict our sustainability ethos. We are always looking for a sustainable and recycled sachet packaging option.
